Ahmed Abdalla (Egyptian, b. 1963), “Artist Statement” (2001). The artist presents his own spin on the traditional “artist’s statement.” Abstracted fragments of Arabic intertwine with strands of an invented visual language to communicate the artist’s story. Hand-crafting his ink and drawing with a traditional Arabic calligraphic pen, Abdalla sketches enigmatic symbols, reminiscent of the phases of the moon, that cascade fluidly down the page.
